Job Summary

Under general supervision, serve as the Assistant Director for the LGBT Resource Center, which serves the entire campus community including underrepresented, underserved, and marginalized students. Work with and supervise students and other staff to provide educational workshops and presentations on topics related to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, and Questioning people, students of color, and students who identify with intersections of multiple identities on campus. Present and facilitate workshops on LGBT and social justice related issues. Supervise the peer education program. Provide guidance, advocacy, and support to students and staff on an individual basis and make referrals.

Work Environment

  • Restricted vacation schedule during academic year.
  • Work flexible hours, including some varied lunch hours, evenings and weekends.
  • Work in a shared office space and active workspace with many distractions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience working with the specific concerns and issues of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer people.
  • Experience advising and supervising students from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, gender identities, religions and sexual orientations in a multicultural college environment.
  • Experience with programming planning and implementation.
  • Knowledge of programs and services for LGBT students.
  • Experience in budgeting and fiscal management.
  • Experience using software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and other computer programs to produce general correspondence, forms, reports, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skill in cultivating and sustaining ongoing collaborative relationships with a wide array of staff, faculty, students, community members, and with campus and community organizations in order to accomplish goals.
  • Skills to successfully recruit, select, train, coordinate, supervise, motivate, develop, and evaluate diverse interns and volunteers.
  • Skills to develop curriculum for training programs.
  • Counseling skills to recognize problems requiring specialized attention and handle difficult, sensitive, and/or confidential issues.
  • Skills to comprehend group dynamics, facilitate group participation, and problem-solving.
  • Skills to understand, articulate, and implement programs and services that include the intersections of sexual orientation and gender identity with gender, race, class, ethnicity, ability and other identities.
  • Skills to act in a lead capacity, and oversee the work of students.
  • Excellent communication skills to express ideas clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
  • Interpersonal skills and political acumen to interact with individuals of varying generations, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives.
  • Skills to make recommendations on policies and procedures for operations of the Center and program delivery.
  • Knowledge of promotional and marketing strategies.
  • Knowledge of University Policy budget process, including university policies governing the use of University funds and facilities, and those governing University support groups and development efforts.
  • Planning and organizational skills to determine competing workload priorities; to meet deadlines, goals and objectives and maintain a high level of productivity in a busy environment.
  • Skills to engage in long-range planning, goal setting, policy development, budget decisions and personnel actions.
  • Skills to perform research and analysis, compile data, and prepare reports for the LGBTRC.
