Duke University has an opening for a full-time Program Coordinator of the LGBT Center.

Duke University invites applications for the position of Program Coordinator of the LGBT Center within the Division of Student Affairs. The mission of the Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Life (Center for LGBT Life) is to provide education, advocacy, support, mentoring, academic engagement, and space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, questioning, and straight-allied students, staff, and faculty at Duke. The Center for LGBT Life also serves and supports Duke alumni/ae and the greater LGBT community. Through its services, the Center encourages critical thinking about the intellectual, cultural, and political ramifications of sexual and gender difference at Duke and beyond. We seek to challenge bias and intolerance in order to promote affirmation and support a more hospitable campus climate.

The Program Coordinator in consultation and collaboration with the Director generates and conducts educational programs for LGBTQ students and their allies as well as the general campus community that promotes further awareness of the lives of LGBTQ individuals and also challenge bias and intolerance. The Program Coordinator fosters academic engagement through programming in partnership with various academic units across the campus to encourage critical thinking about the intellectual, cultural, and political ramifications of sexual and gender difference at Duke and beyond. Additionally, the PC maintains a leadership position in helping to shape the overall diversity agenda on campus by working closely with and providing support for undergraduate, graduate, and professional student communities. The PC manages operations of the Center in the absence of the Director, supervises student staff, and manages the Center's overall programming initiatives; monitors programming budgets; assists with advisement of student organizations; coordinates the Center's marketing plan; manages the Center's Resource Library and website.

Specific duties include:

  • In conjunction with the Director, develop, implement, and evaluate dynamic programming and events for LGBT students, faculty, staff, and allies. Some programming will be coordinated with other campus groups and cultural centers.
  • Develop, coordinate, and disseminate the Center's promotional materials on and off campus.
  • Coordinate open houses and other special events to highlight the Center.
  • Coordinate the Center's Ally Network Program.
  • Coordinate and schedule the Center's programming schedule for the year, including all logistics from travel and lodging to publicity.
  • Provide on-going advising to student organizations both undergraduate and graduate.
  • Coordinate with the Program Director the hiring of student staff and supervise the student staff.
  • Work with the staff specialist on payroll issues and tracking of student staff hours.
  • Establish and maintain contact with other campus departments that provide multicultural program and social justice education.
  • Coordinate the Center's Cybercenter and any associated programming.
  • Assist the Director in managing the Center's operational budget.
  • Manage the Center's daily operations and oversee programming and administrative tasks in the Director's absence.
  • Write year-end reports on programming initiatives and conduct needs assessment evaluations among the Center's constituency groups.
  • Update and maintain the Center website to align it with the mission and goals of the Center.
  • Manage and moderate the Center listserv and generate the weekly Center e-mail.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with and knowledge of the LGBTQ community.
